The Magic of Cinema

While I sorely hate to spoil the climax of The Girls of Pleasure Island (yes, Hester and Jimmy reunite), I thought I'd share it anyway since it displays some of the most extraordinary rear projection work I've ever seen. Sigh, I wish it could go on forever.

This looks like a film best viewed stoned.

Creepy, though, how the ending long shot of the real people on the real beach looks jarringly unreal after the rear screen shots that come before it.

Yeah, they're not running fast enough, or bumpily enough, for one thing. It doesn't match up at all.

My favorite part is how the last "Jimmy" she utters is so quiet, like the excitement's dead already by only the third "Jimmy."

I've never understood why they bother with rear projection when they're going to go on location to shoot the master shot anyway. Maybe if it were an ADR issue, but you don't ever see Don Taylor say "Hester" onscreen anyway.

Tony, add to the fact that they're in Southern California so getting to a beach to quickly film these shots would be easier than finding a cat in Rome in the middle of a milk truck collision. It's a headscratcher.
