I love the song too. But I admit it's been so long since I've seen The Song of Bernadette that it falls into the "I might as well just say I never saw it" category. A TBS viewing some thirty years ago.
But now, thanks to Marilyn, I have moved it to the top of the queue so I can watch it later this week. I always complain about the staleness of biopics, might as well watch one I like. And admittedly I would have watched it soon anyway. Looking at the stills online made me think, "I don't remember it looking like that. It looks great!"
I have a review of it on my site. They used Bernadette's actual testimony to the Church in the dialogue. Plus, how can anyone resist Gladys Cooper's bitter old nun?
Marilyn, I think I've always resisted watching it again because of Jennifer Jones, thinking her too beautiful and glamorous to play such a character, despite her Oscar for it, unlike say a Peggy Ann Garner who has more of a plain country girl look to me. But then looking at the stills again it struck me that Jones looks perfect for the part. I'm excited now to watch it again, for the first time so to speak.
Flickhead = Make an armadillo happy and the world is your oyster. I thought about raising oysters once but it didn't sound right: Make an oyster happy and the world is your armadillo. You can see the problem.
By the way Ray, Cully is kind of a hero of mine. And F.Y.I. - I grew tired of doing banners the old way so all banners from now on are going to be like this and may be up a day or a week or a month, depending. I already have about twenty or so made, pictures of the actor or director in question, against black like Holden here, and a favorite quote. I have three of Cully alone.

When I got tagged on Facebook for "15 Movies that Stuck With You" I listed the 14 titles read off by Larry Storch at the funeral. Sadly, only one person recognized the list. I guess it's just not a very hip comedy to watch these days. Here they are again:

Jennifer Jones looks a bit like the real Bernadette dosen't she?..Seems like actual fotos I've seen of her,shes quite pretty.. By all means see Song of Bernadette and watch Portrait of Jennie for more spiritual fulfillment
I love Portrait of Jennie. Probably watch it every time it's on TCM which means by this point I've seen it at least 20 times, in parts at least. It's a great ghost story.
It gets better everytime I see it..nothing quite like.I'm also a huge fan of Claude Debussy,so the music in the film is icing on the cake..Recently snagged the old anchor bay disc off amazon cheap..
Fred, I probably knew the song before the movie because I still have memories of thinking the movie title was referring to the song when I was a kid. As if Levi Stubbs was singing the song of Bernadette, and then they made a movie out of it.
I should see this again as my only viewing was on TV. Ever since I got to sit down and talk to him at Telluride, I've been a fan of director Henry King.
Looking through his credits I find I like a lot of his films but don't have any I love. Maybe that will change with my re-viewing of The Song of Bernadette. Of course I never met the guy, must've been interesting to talk to considering the number of classic stars he worked with.
Rare as it is there's little denying the worthiness of two Oscars won by THE SONG OF BERNADETTE by Arthur Miller for his luminous black and white cinematography and by composer extraordinaire Alfred Newman for his ravishing score. This is the best film of its kind, and it spawned a host of imitations, lile the inferior THE MIRACLE OF THE LADY OF FATIMA nine years later.

I thought I was the only loonie who thought of "Song of Bernadette" every time I heard Levy Stubbs wail "Bernadette!" on my local odlies station.
