Did someone misunderstand the phrase, "choking the chicken"?
All I know is, the period details are uncanny. If someone hadn't told me this was a studio publicity shot I would have sworn that was a lithograph of a real pilgrim woman enduring a life of back-breaking labor and hardship in a new land.
