We Interrupt this October for an Important Announcement

Well, two actually.

Announcement Number One: The Oldest Established Really Important Film Club (TOERIFC) stops for no man, or theme month celebration, and October is no different. Take a break from the spooks and ghouls of October to discuss Billy Wilder's Kiss Me, Stupid, October's TOERIFC selection hosted by Tom Sutpen at his blog Illusions Travel by Streetcar. The post goes up on October 19th at 10:00 a.m. and to whet your appetite for the discussion please read this brief but superbly written excerpt from Tom's piece on the film. And by all means, grab this classy sidebar banner (I always like the black and white banners the best) to advertise it at your blog as well. The movie is available from i-tunes, Netflix and Amazon Video on Demand so you have no excuse not to see it before the expiration date. Hope to see you there.

Announcement Number Two: Kevin Olson at Hugo Stiglitz Makes Movies is hosting the Italian Horror Blog-a-thon from October 19th through the 31st. For more information follow the link to Kevin's place here and again, snag this sidebar banner here (or choose from two more at Kevin's place) to put up on your blog to advertise this grand affair.

Toerifc Number Ten and the Italian Horror Blog-a-thon. Two things to make your October that much better. See you there.

I've seen Kiss Me, Stupid a several times, both theatrically and at least once on TCM. Netflix use to have the film that was the basis, Wife for a Night available, but it was on the long wait list before dropping out of availability. I still hope to see that film.

I knew about the giallo blogathon, but there is also a new double feature blogathon hosted at Broken Projector.

That's right, Gautam does that every year or did he skip last year? I know I took part in 2007.

Peter, you should stop by Tom's place on the 19th and chime in on the conversation. You're definitely welcome anytime.

Oh! So TOERIFC is on? I was unaware. Okay, then.

But of course it's on! Tom wrote a great piece, at least judging from the preview. It'll be a nice break from the usual October festivities.

I'll have to plan for a light posting day on the 19th.

I plan on light posting throughout the month. I'm a strictly Monday through Friday poster now (there's so much less traffic on the weekends it feels like a waste of a post). For me, "31 Days of..." simply means I'll be covering whatever it is over that 31 day period, not necessarily every day.

I will not!

Phew... I was starting to worry that TOERIFC had died. Maybe you were just waiting to toy with us.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to this one because I know Marilyn in particular has some issues with Wilder.

Oh Arbo, you card. All you have to do is add a day for spooks and ghouls in November. It's that easy!

Fox, I love that that's the reason you're looking forward to it.

Thanks for the plug, Greg. I'm looking forward to this months TOERIFC because this is one Wilder I have yet to see.

Oh, don't get me wrong, I'm not just looking for a cage match (though I have been holed up for a bit and maybe need some sparring), but I've always been curious to hear Marilyn's thoughts on Wilder. I think she's probably expressed them many times previously on her blog and elsewhere, but I think this will be a good forum.

Plus, like Kevin, I've never seen Kiss Me, Stupid, and I'm excited too. I generally like Wilder.

I generally like Wilder, too, when he goes dark. I don't much like his comedies, however.

Greg said...

Kevin, Fox and Bill - it was one of the few Wilder movies I hadn't seen either. I do like a lot of his comedies but the earlier the better. Still, his noirs like Double Indemnity and Sunset Boulevard are my favorites.

I like One Two Three a little better than Some Like it Hot, for later Wilder comedies..Don't think I've ever seen Kiss Me Stupid..after about 1960,I jump ahead to The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes, one of my faves of his from any period..
..We'll have spooks and ghouls bleeding into Turkeys and Santa Claus's because of this little break..nothing unusual there tho..

Cool, I'm off work that day, too, so I'll be able to spend more time on the comments thread than usual.

It'll probably be the most writing I've done in ages....

Looking forward to another great discussion.

Christopher, The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes is another I haven't seen. I'll have to check that one out since you speak so highly of it.

Greg said...

Pat, that would be wonderful to have you fully involved in the conversation without work getting in the way. I look forward to this discussion since we haven't done many comedies, just Boudu and kind of Tin Drum in some ways but this will be the first straight up English language modern comedy we've done.

I like it lots, although I haven't seen it in 30 years.

If you have the time, I recommend Nick Tosches' biography on Dean Martin. Part of it is devoted to the making of Kiss Me, Stupid with an interview with Ray Walston.

"Private Life of Sherlock Holmes" is incredible,a return to the old Wilder wit..beautiful score by Miklos Roza too..and a bald headed Christopher Lee as Mycroft Holmes...Saw it when it first came out in 1970 and alot of it just went over my head and it wasn't a success..but I can't recommend it enough now..Superb Wilder

Christopher, I'm definitely going to see it first chance I get thanks to all the recommendations here.
