Name That Movie, Round Two, Clip 15

UPDATED WITH SECOND CLIP BELOW

And here we are again. As Bill gets ever closer to 10 I wonder if the goal of the game has perhaps fallen down the memory hole of time. This game is not just for fun but a DVD of your choice, $49.99 and under. Two games in a row now have had one person practically stroll across the finish line. For a while Flickhead was in their head to head with Bill but no more. Maybe I should switch this to Wednesday for the sake of competition? Any thoughts? Either way, I have a feeling Bill is going to get this one too. He's been on a hell of a roll lately. As with last week there is a back-up clip ready to go if the first clip doesn't ring any bells. Good luck everyone.

Agh...that looks really familiar. I can't tell if it's just the similarities to Deliverance, or if I actually should know this...

Arbogast said...

Swamp Thing?

Fox said...

Uncommon Valor?

...HEY! Arbo's back!

Greg said...

No on Deliverance and no on Swamp Thing.

The second clip should make it easier. But we're not there yet.

Greg said...

No Fox, not that either. And yes, I wish Arbo competed more so we could get more competition.

Arbogast said...

I didn't think it was Swamp Thing but I had to say it just in case it was right. The very first thing I thought of was Southern Comfort but it's not that.

Fox said...

I was JUST gonna say Southern Comfort too.

Greg said...

No it's not Southern Comfort which I have passed up on DVD multiple times. I always see it for 6.99 and think I'll get since I liked it when I saw it in 82 or whenever it came out but then I don't. I don't know why but there you have it.

Greg said...

Second clip at 11:20.

Be ready. It should clinch it.

Arbogast said...

Just a shot in the dark - is it Apocalypse Now Redux?

Greg said...

Nope. Four minutes to clip two.

Arbogast said...

How many now?

bill r. said...

I think we're still at four minutes. Man, this is taking forever.

Arbogast said...

Bill, I just saw a black guy hanging around your car in the parking lot. You better go check that out.

bill r. said...

Son of a...!

MARATHON MAN

Greg said...

Bill got it!

AGAIN!

It is indeed Marathon Man.

I knew that second clip would give it away.

Arbogast said...

Bill must hate his car.

Greg said...

"Langsamer!"

"Don't you langsamer me you Nazi bastard! Gehen zum teufel! Mach schnell!"

Best old man fight in a movie EVER!

Greg said...

Bill's always hated his car.

Arbogast said...

I need to see Marathon Man again - it's been over 20 years, I think.

bill r. said...

It's been a while for me, too, but I used to watch it a lot. Among other things, Marathon Man is one of my favorite titles. Don't really know why.

And my car is worth less that $49.95, so I figured this was more worth my time.

Arbogast said...

Memo to self: Find out what Bill loves and exploit that vulnerability.

Greg said...

Like Bill I've watched this a lot. On cable, VHS, and now DVD. I love it, in part because I like the slow, methodical character based thrillers of the seventies which I felt the first Bourne movie got pretty close to.

Greg said...

Bill loves meat. Big thick juicy steaks. Use that. I'm not sure how but you'll figure it out.

bill r. said...

I also love puppies and kitties. If you threatened to hurt one of those, I don't know what I'd do. I bet you would never do that, though, so I'm probably safe.

Any of you ever read the novel Marathon Man, by William Goldman? I much prefer the ending to that, where Babe really embraces the idea of vengeance. Goldman later tried to ruin everything by writing a sequel called Brothers, where [SPOILERS FOR ANYONE WHO HASN'T READ OR SEEN MARATHON MAN] he brings back Doc. It's ludicrous, as is the whole rest of the novel, but what's curious is that he doesn't bring Doc back in a novel that sets everything right. If anything, Brothers is far more bleak than Marathon Man. It's also not anywhere near as good, but I've successfully separated the two in my head, so as far as I'm concerned, the Doc of Marathon Man is still dead.

Greg said...

How in the hell does he bring back Doc? Frankenstein style or something? I mean, the guy's dead, like Jacob Marley.

And on the documentary on the DVD William Goldman goes off about the ending of the movie and how he couldn't stand it but it was forced on him after he wrote the script. He didn't have final say and they stuck on the ending you see whereas he wanted Babe to just kill the fucker, and not by accident.

I'd be interested to hear more about BROTHERS just because it sounds so ridiculous. Do they fight crime together once they're reunited?

bill r. said...

No, they're not actually reunited until the end, and, in fact, I think Babe is more of a supporting character. He's not part of the main plot, anyway. His normal life with his wife is a subplot until the end.

As I remember, Goldman doesn't describe how Doc is saved. He just is. The first part of the novel describes his rehabilitation, but not the specifics of how he lived. And what's funny is that the novel Marathon Man makes it even more clear that Doc is dead as shit. So I don't know. Goldman's output of novels was about to dry up (Brothers might be his last one, actually), so maybe he was desperate. And like I said, the book is nuts. I don't remember the main plot very well, but whoever the villains were had devised these robot bombs that looked like schoolchildren, and when they detonated they would take out whole city blocks, or something. I'm not making that up. Also [SPOILER!!!!!!!!!!] the villains win. Babe's wife is killed in one of the blasts, though the book ends before he finds out, and you get the impression that the end of the world, or at least civilization as we know it, is not far behind. It's really crazy.

Goldman wrote another crazy thriller called Control. Most of it is set in the present day, but there is an important period-set subplot involving Thomas Edison.

Despite the way this comment is probably coming across, I actuall am, or at least was, a great fan of Goldman's novels. I've read most of them, and just writing briefly about them here makes me want to go back and re-read Control and even Brothers. Those are a kooky, crazy couple o' books.

Greg said...

Robot bomb children? Plots involving Thomas Edison? I have to read Goldman for inspiration with The Invisible Edge! Wow, those stories sound incredible!

Brian Doan said...

Dammit! I would've gotten this one, too. Note to self: check this blog earlier. And distract Bill with something shiny.

Goldman is great-- he's an alum of our college, and we're hoping to get him here to speak in the fall. I'd love to pick his brain about all those great screenplays. I am not as familiar with his novels, I must admit, but ADVENTURES IN THE SCREEN TRADE is still one of my favorite books about Hollywood.

Greg said...

Brian, ask him about the robot bomb children! Please! And then ask him why he hasn't done more tv and movie work centered around them.

bill r. said...

Brian, if you could ask him if there's any hope of another novel by him, that would be super. I don't really think the answer would be "Yes", as he's pretty old now, but you never know.

Greg, go to a used bookstore, and go to their thriller or mystery section. You'll find both those books. They were bestsellers in the 80s, which is a used bookstore's bread and butter.

Greg said...

I will!

Arbogast said...

Any of you ever read the novel Marathon Man, by William Goldman? No, but I did read the one by Jacqueline Suzanne. That was hot!

Greg said...

I did read the one by Jacqueline Suzanne. That was hot!...

It was stolen?

bill r. said...

Arbo, nobody likes a smart-ass.

Rick Olson said...

Marathon Man! Do I get a point?

Marilyn said...

I never saw Marathon Man either, so even if I had remembered about the contest, it's rigged against me. Curse you, Greg Baron!

Rick Olson said...

I saw it, but so long ago that I couldn't remember anything about it, much less too short, context-less clips.

Marathon Man!

Greg said...

Rick and Marilyn get no points but you both will always have a special place in my heart.

And I have to update the point totals soon. But really, I think this is it. I think I'm done with this game (after this one is won of course, by Bill most likely). Each week at game time there are plenty of links (from alphainventions, stumbleupon, etc) and lots of readers show up but outside of my good friends, all of you here, no one guesses. It's weird. I love that I'm friends with everyone competing but wish it was more of a game for everyone stopping by which it clearly isn't.

So, I think I'll wrap it up after this one's done.

PIPER said...

Damn.

Greg,

If you could hold everyone off until I get around to your posts, that would be great. And I would look at lot smarter.

I knew the clip was Marathon Man. And it's a great opening, but that scene always struck me as odd because it was so drawn out.

Greg said...

Which scene? The South American scene with Zell or the New York car scene?

The NY car scene might go on a little long but I love the two old bastards fighting with each other.

And don't worry about how you look Piper, we all know you're a genius.

BLH said...

The second clip totally gave it away. But for the life of me I can't recall where that first clip fits into the movie.

Eh, Three Days of the Condor is better anyway...

Greg said...

The South American scene is when you first see Zell. The lady comes on the boat with the laundry and then he takes her place when the boat leaves.

PIPER said...

The two old bastards scene. It's a great scene.

bill r. said...

Greg, you still haven't updated the leader's list. Please do so. I have 8 points now.

Greg said...

6 points, got it.

bill r. said...

No! 8! I have 8! NOOOOOOOO!!!

PIPER said...

Um Bill?

Jeez, this is awkward, and I hate to do this, but Greg promised me a couple of your points. So 6 is right.

Greg said...

Yeah, one point for each old bastard.
