Wake Up to Breakfast at Bill's Place

Don't forget: Monday, April 20th is the date of discussion for TOERIFC's next selection The Serpent's Egg, chosen by Bill of The Kind of Face You Hate. His post on the film will be up at 10:00 a.m. on the East Coast. If you have seen the film recently or know it well enough to join in the discussion then please do, the more the merrier.

And Name That Film will return next week here on Cinema Styles.

Certainly an unusual choice. I saw it a few years ago when I was doing a Bergman retrospective and my only lingering impression is that Bergman had a bad time with male English-speaking actors...both this & The Touch make their respective leads (Carradine here, Gould there) seem awkward, fumbling, and erratic - and not in a good way.

Have you ever seen that German production (I think it's called From the Life of Marionettes)? Though that's also a bit fuzzy in my memory, it left a strong impression in terms of mood and I recall a particularly haunting dream sequence. Bergman was so prolific, and his ouevre is full of so many surprises.

No I haven't seen From the Life of the Marionettes, my viewing of Bergman has been restricted to the "big" titles for now (Persona, Seventh Seal, Wild Strawberries, Fannie and Alexander, etc.) so I still have plenty to see.

I'll keep my discussion of The Serpent's Egg for tomorrow but I will say that I was pleasantly surprised by how much better it was than I expected, having heard about the pans it received upon release. I think it's flaws have been overstated.

I don't care if nobody likes my post, or if I only get nine comments. I'm just glad the goddamn thing is going up on time, because it very nearly didn't go up at all.

Computer crash, you see!

Everyone will love the post and it's impossible for a TOERIFC post to only get nine comments, we're all too longwinded. See you at the end of the countdown (it's kind of exciting watching the countdown in the sidebar and on the TOERIFC site - I should have started it earlier).

But, just so you know, the internet here at work has already gone down three times this morning. So if I disappear for a short time here and there, it's not my fault.

the internet here at work has already gone down three times this morning.Figures. The story of my weekend.

And you wanna talk about long-winded, wait'll you see my post! It's long, is what I'm saying.

I love how in our magnificently advanced technological society, sustained heavy rain makes the internet go out.

Anyway, like how long? Pages and pages? Did you leave any room for discussion or did you cover every single possible aspect, outcome and theory? Did you devote several paragraphs to Ullman's wig? I would have.

It came out to four pages, single spaced, on Word. That's not the longest post I've ever written, but it's right up there.

No, I didn't cover everything. I don't want to get into my doubts about the post -- or what I'm pleased with, for that matter -- even in vague terms, because it'll sound like I'm fishing for something. Suffice it say, I'm glad this is fucking over. In 20 minutes, I mean.

NAME THAT FILM MONDAYS:

The Serpent's Egg!

Yay! I'm on the board!

Greg said...

Good job Fox, I'm proud of you.

bill r. said...

If that's the answer, I'm going to be sooooo mad!

Fox said...

BTW... I hope Jarvis isn't mad at me for not seeing his film yet.

I took the day off on Friday and then totally blanked for the rest of the weekend.

And NOW I have to wait until I get home to see his movie b/c You Tube is banned here.

Bill, it's not The Serpent's Egg. It's a time travel episode of Kung Fu.Fox, I hope you like the movie. Jarvis is very proud of it. And I'm a little nervous.
