This May 18th, less than three weeks from now, TOERIFC will presents it's fifth film discussion, this one hosted by Pat of Doodad Kind of Town.
The May selection is Dancer in the Dark and on the main TOERIFC site you will find six new sidebar banners that you can put up to advertise the discussion. I have mine linked to the main TOERIFC site where the top post shows links to Pat's site and a countdown to the post time. I recommend doing the same but if you want to link your pic directly to Pat's site now please do. As always, on the date of the discussion I will change all the links to TOERIFC both here and on the main site to the permalink on Pat's post.
And remember - Anyone who has seen the movie recently or knows it well enough already can join in the discussion so rent it or buy it today and give it a watch so you can join in the discussion.

Yikes! That was quick.
Also -- and I'm not trying to start the conversation early -- this was a good pick by Pat. This is a film that'll get a discussion rolling.
Well it's three weeks to go and I felt like I put yours up too late. I think it was around two weeks or so. What I've started to do is get about two movies ahead: So I've already bought and received Dancer in the Dark and Someone to Love. That way I can have banners and things ready to go about a week after the previous post went up. The more advertising time the better.
And yes, it's a great pick, I agree.
In college, my fiancee's uncle lent us this movie on DVD, and we planned to watch it but were never quite in the mood, so months later we returned it to him unseen. Then I bought the DVD at least 2-3 years ago when I found it for a couple of bucks somewhere, and have *still* not watched it, despite loving von Trier's Dogville. So thanks, Pat, for giving me the impetus to finally watch this. I'm looking forward to it.
And Greg, I think this is good timing -- it's good to have a nice long lead time to spread the word about each film.
That makes sense. I haven't really stuck to the idea of buying all the movies, though. I'll probably grab this one, since I've already seen it, and can probably find it cheap. And I saw a used copy of Kiss Me, Stupid at my local video store that I keep meaning to pick up, but haven't yet. I hope it's not gone. And I'll definitely buy ...if (another great choice), because I've been meaning to buy it since Criterion released it, anyway.
And I don't know about you, but I already have two possibilites for my next pick. Which will probably both fall off the list when the time comes, but they're good choices, I must say.
Ed, I have so many movies like that. DVDs I rented and returned without ever watching them or ones I actually own, and have for years, and still haven't watched.
Bill, seeing as it's practically a year off I haven't thought of anything yet. I'd love to do a documentary that isn't widely known, like Marilyn did. Something that would be a first viewing for almost everyone.
Both of my picks are by directors well-known only to cinephiles, and I don't think it's a foregone conclusion that anyone has seen either, although one was put out by Criterion last year. The other one is available on Netflix, but the DVD is out of print, and could be dropped by Netflix by the time my turn rolls around again. Either way, I should track down a used copy...
I should add, though, that while the directors are well-known only to cinephiles, they're very well-known in that circle. One of them is considered one of the indisputable giants.
Michael Bay?
Yes, but not one of his famous ones. It's The Island.
Awesome pick, Bill.
Seriously, just tell us...
We are watching a movie that takes place in Washington State the same day we Washingtonians celebrate the 29th anniversary of Mt. St. Helens erupting. I know it means nothing, but its kinda cool in my head at least.
Ed - But what if I don't end up picking one of those? Then I'd get everyone excited for nothing. For nothing!
Kassy - You guys celebrate that?
But if we don't like these possibilities maybe we'll be excited -- "gee, I'm really glad Bill didn't pick any of those crappy films he said he was going to pick."
One is French and the other is Japanese.
Now guess!
Totally random guess:
Rohmer and Ozu
WRONG!
Just to entice you further: I am not offering a prize for the person who gets it right.
So come on, everybody, let's hear your guesses!
Oooooh, ooh, I want that prize.
Melville and Naruse.
This could theoretically go on forever.
I didn't finish wastching Dancer in the Dark, so here's my chance to try again and see if I can make it through. I hadn't seen any of the films we've discussed so far except for the one I picked. This club has been working very well for me.
Walsh and Russel?l
No and no!
Remember, Marilyn, one is French and the other is Japanese.
No one's guessing. I guess I better sweeten the pot.
Whoever guesses the answer will have their name mentioned in passing on my blog!
Melville? Bresson? Godard? Tati? Ophuls?
I'm just throwing out the French filmmakers I can remember Criterion releasing last year...
I'm back from my disappearing act. Anyway, French and Japanese? I'll say Truffaut and Ozu.
Or Truffaut and Kurosawa.
Or Godard and Ozu.
Or Godard and Kurosawa.
Or Resnais and Mizoguchi.
Or... ah, hell it's got to be some combination of the above choices.
Except scratch Ophuls, who was born in Germany but worked in French. Brain-fart.
Oops. I missed the instructions.
Miike and Assayas.
Kiyoshi Kurosawa and Chabrol.
Okay, Ryan got the French director: Bresson.
But did I say if it was the Japanese or French film that was released on Criterion?? So we still need the Japanese director and film, and the Bresson film.
Come on guys!
Kinoshita's Twenty Four Eyes.
And for Bresson: A Man Escaped?
Mouchette???
NO!
Remember, Ryan...the Bresson film isn't necessarily the one released by Criterion. It could be that the Japanese film got the Criterion treatment!
SUSPENSE!!!
Ed -
Kinoshita's Twenty Four Eyes...
You can't just make shit up. Anyway, no to both.
Okay, the Criterion disc was 2007, not 2008. My mistake.
But here's a hint: The Japanese film got the Criterion treatment, and Criterion has recently been showing a lot of interest in this director. There's the film that got released, and there are some other Criterion DVDs of this guy's work in the pipeline.
Which would mean it's something by Kobayashi, yes?
I'll add that I'm only playing this game because I have homework I should be doing. Hooray for distractions!
Which would mean it's something by Kobayashi, yes?...
NO!!!!!
Sydney Pollack! TOOTSIE!
Right! Wait, no. He wasn't Japanese, was he?
Either way, no. But keep trying, you guys!
Me! A home movie I did last year.
NO!!!!!...
You just delight in putting me down. You're just a... you're just a... j-j-j-j-jerk!
It's Bresson's Ryan Doesn't Give a Shit and Is Only Playing This Game Because He's Procrastinating Doing His Homework. I forget the French translation.
Ah-ha. Imamura's Pornographers.
And L'argent.
This game's boring now. Someone guess what I'm drinking instead.
Turpentine?
Nope, but the second letter is indeed a "U". Actually, it's the first letter because the first character in the name is a number, 7.
So anyway, it starts with a "7" then has a red dot and a "U". Oh man, you guys are never going to get it!
A drink with a number in it, that's proposterous. What kind of funky country do you live in? Here in America, we spell our soft drinks with WORDS. Schmuck.
So what is it? Gasoline? Crude Oil? Bleach? Laundry Detergent? Miller Lite?
Shohei Imamura is correct! The film is not, though.
And L'Argent is also correct!!! Oh my God, we're almost there, everybody! You guys are doing great!
Greg, you're drinking 7 gallons of Urine.
THAT must be it! You figured he'd have learned his lesson after last time. Oh man, he was wasted. You might say he was piss drunk.
Oh, I forgot Criterion released Vengeance Is Mine too. What a great film.
Ha, you're all wrong. I'm drinking 7*Ulcers Soda. It's filled with sulfuric acid that burns through your stomach. Every time I drink it I have to go to the hospital. I'm not sure why I keep drinking it. Oh yeah, it's flavored with piss. I knew there was a reason.
You've really gotta lay off the piss, man. You're drinking way too much.
Ed's right! Hey, everybody, the game is over! Ed won! And Ryan sort of got one! That was exciting!!
So, yeah, I thought maybe, in ten months time, that I might pick L'Argent or Vengeance is Mine. For the, you know...for the film club. Anyway, whatever, I'll probably end up picking something else.
So now what? Oh yeah, Greg drinks urine!! That's so gross, you guys! Blech!!
You know, I forgot what I was guessing for. Film club? Oh yeah, that thing...
Film club. What film club?
Actually, that's a great idea. We should start a film club! Bill, what are you going to pick for us to see?
How about Raising Helen?
No. Boxing Helena should be the first one.
I think the film club should allow only picks with active verbs in the title: Boxing Helena, Driving Miss Daisy, Raging Bull, Guarding Tess, etc.
Folks, that's a million dollar idea and I just gave it to everyone for free.
I dunno, Greg, that might make your readers feel clubbed to death.
Is Clubbing my Readers a movie? If not it should be.
Anyway, Regarding Henry.
Sorry I missed out on yesterday's lively comment thread. Unfortunately, work commitments kept my offline all day. (Damn that pesky need to make a living!)
Anyway, I'm glad everyone is exctied for "Dancer in the Dark." I'm anxious to get to it again myself, and I'm planning to watch it either tonight or Friday, with repear vieiwings planned in the days to come.
Given the fine work of the all TOERIFC hosts who have preceded me, I hope I can come up with a post that continues the standard of excellence.
Regarding Henry? Meh. How about this original title?
Pat, I look forward to your post on it and I'm sure it will be superb. It's a great choice I think.
Okay Peter, that's the winner. Sure beats Finding Forrester.
