Name that Movie 8 - Bonus Round

As always, here's the bonus round. This time I left the sound in (in fact, why take it out unless there's a musical cue or name spoken that might give it away) because the actor mumbles to himself throughout. With the sound muted, it looked like there was dialogue there that might help and I didn't want you to feel shorted. Guess away.

Pretty sure it's the 1937 A STAR IS BORN, isn't it?

And Brian's ON THE BOARD TOO!!!!

Okay, everybody else (Bill, Marilyn, Kimberly, Larry, Pat, Krauthammer, Peter, Adam, Sheila, Flickhead, Campaspe and on and on) get on the board. Arbo, Gloria, Rick, Fox, Pierre, Brian and the mysterious Beef are all up there. Join them.

Oh yeah, and Arbo got the actresses in the Grand Opening pic so he's now up to five points and the clear front runner.

However...

If you all recall my first DVD giveaway game Adam Ross made it all the way to the last clue while Bill was still struggling with the first and had basically given up.

And remember who won that one -

Bill!!!

So everyone's still in it. Trust me.

Bill is like my Rocky Balboa-- a role model to follow and be inspired by.

It was the sign in the back of the shot that tipped me off, oddly enough-- that, and the fact that Selznick's late 30s Technicolor films just look so distinctive. Don't know if that's because the technology was so new, if it was Pioneer/Selznick International's investment in Technicolor processes, or what-- but they have this otherworldly glow (almost like sci-fi) that makes them stand out.

So who's Apollo Creed? First he's the competitor but then he's the friend who helps you beat jerks like Clubber Lang. And then who's Clubber Lang?

And yes, it's clearly a color film from the thirties and there weren't many of those. But not to knock your nailing of it, good job. I don't know if there's a good transfer of this yet but if so I'd like to have it. The DVD I have (obviously these are all coming from my DVD collection so I can pick just the right non-obvious scene) is a cheapie Digiview release that's pretty crappy.

Well. I would if you gave me something I could guess! I've been totally stumped with the past three.
How good is the '37 version by the way? I love the Cukor version so much that I've never felt the need for another ASIB.

Given your stylish mohawk, Jonathan, I thought the Lang question was easily answered.

Or maybe you're Mickey-- I did see you forcing that raw egg drink down Bill's throat the other day...

Krauthammer,
The Cukor version is easily the best (the worst is UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL, with a miscast Redford/Pfeiffer), but I like the '37 version. It's hokey and sentimental as all get-out, but that's not bad, and Frederic March is really good. And if Janet Gaynor seems a little miscast, her earnestness and dedication to overcoming the miscasting gives her Vicky Lester a strange, almost childlike intensity that fits with the film's vision of a Hollywood that's at once cynical and magical.

I like the 37 version a lot but I gravitate towards that period of film anyway. I like Cukor's A Star is Born too but it's too epic and too concerned with Judy Garland numbers than character development. I know I sound like a heretic but don't get me wrong I still think it's very well done. It's just that once the story of Vicki and Norman starts to develop everything stops so we can watch a twenty minute montage of Judy singing. I think it's better in the edited version. Much tighter and the story holds together better.

Brian, it was five raw eggs.

Larry Aydlette said...

Wow, my first guess on that clip was that it was the first caretaker of the Overlook Hotel. Guess I was wrong...

Jonathan Lapper said...

Eventually Larry, I'm going to give you a sympathy point. But if I put up anything from the Burt Reynolds canon and you don't get it, I'm taking the point away.

Fox said...

Dammit... ok, I need to get on my computer more on the weekends. This is definitely motivation for that. I can let some guy name Beef be on the same level as I am.

Krauthammer said...

beef is a trivia master and I shall hear no slander against him!

Jonathan Lapper said...

Beef - It's what's for dinner.

Hey everyone, sorry I've been absent for a while. Did I win the DVD?

Jonathan Lapper said...

Yeah, I already sent it to you last week. Didn't you get it?

bill r. said...

No! Stupid mailman or UPS man! Which movie am I getting this time!?

Jonathan Lapper said...

Girls Gone Wild XXVII, the Butte, Montana edition.

bill r. said...

Is that the one with the drunk naked girls? Or am I thinking of something else?

Jonathan Lapper said...

That's the one. The only one without was Girls Gone Wild, XVII, the nursing home edition.

BTW, I had a much more offensive joke there but decided against it as I am currently writing a new post and don't have time to defend myself.

Peter Nellhaus said...

And if Schoedsack and Cooper were alive today, we'd have Gorillas gone Wild.

Jonathan Lapper said...

The Skull Island Edition.
