Gone of the Dead

"No, I don't think I will eat your brain, although you need your brain eaten, badly. That's what's wrong with you. You should have your brain eaten and often, and by someone who knows how."

That's kind of mizombynistic, Lapper, don't you think? You're making a commentary on the intelligence of women!!!

That picture's so romantic. Even in decomp, they have the hots for each other.

If anything, Fox, it's a comment on him. Not going to eat those young fresh brains? The man doesn't know a good thing when he smells it.

It is romantic, isn't it? I love the last scene where she says, "Where will I go? What shall I do?" and then he starts to say, "Frankly my dear, ..." and then his lower jaw falls off. Then her eyes widen and she lunges, consuming his entire face. It's true what she says, she'll never be hungry again.

And look how she smiles at him. Well, I assume that's a smile. It's so hard to tell with zombies. They seem so up and positive and then they go for your brains and you realize they've been angry all along.

But wait... zombies can't each other's brains can they? I've never pondered this.

They are a deceitful lot aren't they? Whenever I hear a zombie say, "trust me," even as just a figure of speech, I cringe.

But wait... zombies can't eat each other's brains can they? I've never pondered this.

That's why I'm here Fox, to make people think. As Conway Twitty once sang, "That's my job, that's what I do."

Fox said...

"Everything I do is because of you, to keep you safe with me... that's my job you see."

AWWW... Lapper...

This reminds me that Val Lewton use to work for David O. Selznick. Oh the possiblities . . .

Slightly off topic (if that's possible in this thread), but I read recently that three Val Lewton movies are slated to be remade: I Walked With a Zombie, The Body Snatcher (my favorite), and Bedlam.

Good luck, you idiots.*

*"Idiots" is not a reference to anyone here.

Also to be remade is Five Came Back.

Yeah, that's one story that's always needed more swearing.

As long as we're on the subject (thanks Peter) I have always considered it a crime that Karloff was not nominated for either Best Actor or Best Supporting Actor (depending on how you interpret who the lead is) for The Body Snatcher. I think it's an incredibly good performance and also think Karloff should have been nominated for Frankenstein as well. What a great, vastly under appreciated actor he was.

They remade Five Came Back as a Coors commercial a couple of decades ago as I recall. Alas, that version was also lacking in profanity.

Karloff is brilliant in The Body Snatcher. Of course, so is Henry Daniell, but I agree that Karloff was terribly underrated. His big scene with Lugosi, as well as his famous scene in the tavern with Daniell, are proof enough of his talent.

Actually, I have a book called Horror: The Book of Lists, and one of the lists I haven't perused yet deals with Karloff's best scenes in which he's interacting with one other actor. I know, that's a bizarrely specific area to focus on, but still, when I get home I'll read it, and, if anyone's interested, let you guys know what films they get into. You can never have too much Karloff in your comment threads.

His scene with Lugosi is superb in its quiet menace. Karloff's character has this smiling demeanor that fails to hide his sinister side.

I'd be interested in that list. Let me know what's on it.

Bill's "*"Idiots" is not a reference to anyone here." is a passive, jabbing reference to my misinterpreted reference to him when I typed "brilliant". Though Bill is brilliant, I didn't mean him to be in the "brilliant" group I spoke of.

No, Fox, that's not what it my "idiots" statement was about. It was what it seemed to be. People sometimes take things incorrectly, and although I didn't think anyone would think I was actually calling them an idiot -- since there was no context for that -- I figured I'd put in a jokey disclaimer at the end.

Simmer down, for Pete's sake.

I don't know who Pete is, but I WILL NOT simmer down.

Thanks TuscaZombie, but it's such a well (de)composed shot to begin with isn't it?

Lapper,

Why ya gotta go all zuni fetish doll on me? Huh? Why ya gotta do that?

Fox,

The mizombynistic is beautiful stuff.
