Vernon has quite a list of credits but that is one of my favorite moments of his ever and one of my favorite stupid comedy moments in the movies. There's something so perfect about his delivery, so non-overplayed but sane and logical, even though it's clearly mad. And Allen's punchline - Sidney Applebaum. I just can't get enough of that scene.
And thanks on the banner. I was just thinking the other day about how many Lemmy Caution movies are out there and I think Alphaville is the only one I've seen. When I checked IMDB I think it had about 14 or 15 times that Constantine had played Caution. I've got to see more.
Melville, Franco, Lang, Allen - He's worked with amazing assortment of directors. I like a lot of Love and Death but without Vernon's small role the movie wouldn't be the same. His utter earnestness makes the scenes he's in brilliant.
By the way, speaking of famous character actors, for those who don't know this movie, that's James Tolkan fighting a double of himself in the background as Napoleon.
That parody of "Persona" in the final scene of "Love and Death" has forever ruined the original Bergman film for me. I can't watch that shot in "Persona" now without giggling.
I think it's Allen's best of his "silly/slapstick" comedies. And it's clear that it was as far as he could go with it so it made sense that after this we got Annie Hall, Interiors, Manhattan etc. And yes, it's a great parody as well - Persona, Nevsky, War and Peace (obviously), in general a perfect parodic blending of Tolstoy and Bergman. Who'd a thunk it?
